Greenland—the largest island in the world (that isn’t a continent), and self-ruling Danish territory—has recently undergone a national election, seen protests seeking autonomy from Denmark, and has prominently become the target of President Donald Trump to somehow “get” the territory as part of the United States. Several news agencies recently sent photographers to the cities of Nuuk, Ilulissat, and more, to cover the local population, their reactions to the larger stories, and their own moves toward independence. The winning party of the March 11 elections is described by the AP as “a pro-business party that favors a slow path to independence,” and opposes Trump’s recent efforts.
