The curtains haven’t even officially raised, and already “Othello” has broken records on Broadway. The highly anticipated Shakespeare revival, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, brought in a record $2.8 million in its second week of previews.

Thankfully, tickets are still available for the rest of she show’s Broadway run, which officially opens on Sunday, March 23. The play will run in a limited engagement at the Barrymore Theatre until Sunday, June 8. Kenny Leon, who won a Tony for directing the 2014 revival of “A Raisin in the Sun,” starring Washington, directs the production of new production. Washington plays the title character, while Gyllenhaal portrays the antagonist Iago, who tries to convince Othello that his wife has been unfaithful. West End actor Molly Osborne plays Othello’s wife, Desdemona.

“Othello” was last revived on Broadway in 1982 with James Earl Jones as Othello and Christopher Plummer as Iago. Oliver Parker adapted the play into a 1995 film, led by Laurence Fishburne and Kenneth Branagh. That cinematic take was predated by Orson Welles’ 1951 movie of the same name, which was plagued with production headaches but later hailed as a classic.

The Shakespeare revival is one of many star-studded productions opening on Broadway this spring. Other hot tickets include “The First pIcture of Dorian Gray,” starring Sarah Snook, “Good Night, and Good Luck,” which will see George Clooney make his Broadway debut, “John Proctor Is the Villain,” led by Sadie Sink and “Call Me Izzy” starring Jean Smart.
