Bootham Bar, one of York’s medieval gateways, is undergoing significant conservation work as part of the city’s ongoing efforts to preserve its historic walls. The six-month project began in mid-June and is being led by the City of York Council’s in-house team of stonemasons.

The work focuses on preserving the timber and lead structure of Bootham Bar’s roof, which has been prone to intermittent leaking. Crews will strip out modern elements and conserve the original timber structures, applying specialist techniques to safeguard the medieval fabric of the site.

Bootham Bar stands on the site of the Porta Principalis Dextra, the northwestern gate of the Roman fortress built in York around 72 AD. While the current structure is medieval, it sits atop this much older foundation, making the site one of York’s most historically layered landmarks.

“We’re one of only a few local authorities with an in-house stonemason’s team,” said Councillor Pete Kilbane. “They will be applying their craft and skills to Bootham Bar over the next few months, maintaining the ancient gateway and preserving our mediaeval walls for the generations to come.”

This conservation project will cost approximately £300,000, funded through the council’s capital programme. The city also hopes to support future preservation initiatives through a forthcoming “Tap and Donate” scheme, which will allow residents and visitors to contribute directly to the maintenance of York’s historic monuments.

While the focus remains on conservation, practical accommodations are in place during the works. Bootham Bar has been enclosed in scaffolding, and the section of road running through it—High Petergate—has been closed to vehicles and cyclists, with diversions in place. Pedestrians will still be able to pass through using the arch beneath the Bar, and a temporary ramp is being provided for wheelchair and mobility scooter users.

York’s medieval city walls are among the most complete in England, and Bootham Bar is one of their most prominent gateways. This latest effort reflects the city’s commitment to protecting its historic landscape through carefully planned, expert-led restoration.
