Former Manchester United prodigy Angel Gomes, who has been rumoured to make a sensational return to Old Trafford, has revealed that he’s set to go under the knife for a nagging injury. Having climbed the ranks at United from the tender age of six, Gomes broke into the senior squad aged 16, making 10 appearances for the Red Devils.
However, a lack of game time led him to seek pastures new and revitalise his career with Lille in France.
It was there that Gomes’ talent truly shone, racking up 129 games for the French outfit, which earned him a call-up to the senior England squad by Lee Carsley this year.
Amidst this success, there have been murmurs that United might be keen on a nostalgic reunion next summer.
Ruben Amorim has reportedly given United the green light to sanction a deal for Gomes, should the opportunity arise next year.
Yet, for the moment, the 24-year-old is concentrating on bouncing back from his recent injury woes.
His heartfelt statement on Instagram said: “For the past few months I have been dealing with an injury that has deeply affected my ability to perform at the level I hold myself to.
“Those who know me understand how much I love playing this game and what it means to me. Not being able to give my best on the pitch has been incredibly frustrating.
“After working closely with the medical team, we’ve decided that the best course of action is to treat the injury and fully focus on rehabilitation to secure a complete recovery.
“This was a difficult decision because all I want to do is play and help the team in every way possible. But it’s the right choice to make sure I come back better and stronger.
“I’m fully committed to putting in the work during this rehab period and do everything I can to be back out there on the pitch where I belong.
“Your support means everything to me, and I’m grateful for your patience and understanding. Thank you for sticking with me through this period. See you soon! Allez le Losc.”
The creative midfielder has clocked up 15 appearances for Lille this season and contributed to a goal and an assist each.
He has not been provided with a definitive return date. Nonetheless, this setback will certainly cut into his remaining time at the French club.
Like his situation at United half a decade ago, his current contract with Lille is due to run out at season’s end.
From January onwards, foreign clubs will have the opportunity to negotiate pre-contracts in preparation for a free transfer on 1 July 2025. His former club could be among the suitors circling.
