If you ever wander into the Jeseniky mountain range in the Czech Republic, you might be greeted with a mountain that is missing its top. Built with concrete shipped all the way from Albania to withstand the extreme temperatures and located on one of the tallest mountains in the historical region of Moravia, this power station is a destination worth a visit.
This humongous water battery was partially engineered during the Czechoslovak communist period. It was completed after the Velvet Revolution. The power station remains the pillar of the Czech electrical grid, and currently also serves as the final blackout stopgap. The power station has the ability to kickstart the coal powerplant in Chvaletice, 150 kilometers away.
However, there has also been some negative press surrounding this place. Located smack-dab in the middle of a park, it has been the target of protests by environmental activists.
