A recent survey by Deloitte indicates that Gen Z and millennials are both optimistic and apprehensive about generative artificial intelligence (AI), with uncertainty being the prevailing sentiment.
According to a comprehensive survey conducted by Deloitte Global, generative artificial intelligence (AI) continues to foster optimism and caution among the younger workforce globally. The study, which involved over 22,800 respondents across 44 countries, aimed to understand the sentiments of millennials and Gen Z towards the rapidly emerging gen AI technologies and their impact on work environments.
The 2024 Gen Z and Millennial Survey by Deloitte reveals that uncertainty is the dominant emotion experienced by both age groups when considering generative AI. The survey found that 27% of Gen Z participants and 34% of Millennial respondents stated they never use generative AI in their work. Meanwhile, 42% of Gen Z and 38% of millennials reported infrequent or occasional use. However, approximately 25% of respondents who regularly use generative AI at work expressed a heightened sense of optimism and an increased cognizance of the potential risks associated with these technologies.
Interestingly, the survey found that Gen Z and millennial respondents who frequently use generative AI tend to believe it will enhance their working style, provide them with more free time, and improve their work-life balance. Simultaneously, these same respondents also expressed concern that gen AI-driven automation could eliminate job opportunities, particularly for younger generations entering the workforce. This apprehension is likely due to the potential of AI technologies to automate manual tasks typically assigned to entry-level workers.
However, the study also suggests that familiarity with gen AI can mitigate these concerns, as with other technologies. According to the survey responses, opportunities exist for companies to familiarize their employees with gen AI through targeted training initiatives. The survey found that about half of the respondents (51% of Gen Z and 45% of millennials) reported that their employers are providing training on the capacities, benefits, and value of Gen AI. This indicates a significant opportunity for organizations to foster a more positive outlook towards AI technologies by equipping their employees with the necessary skills to succeed in an AI-driven work environment.
