Just 2.5 miles from Salamanca is a colossal Brutalist building. Made of concrete, the giant geometric structure is a monument to the sculptor Ángel Mateos. Inside, the site displays his work, which is also made completely of concrete.
The Ángel Mateos Museum was conceived by the artist himself, designed as “a sculpture that contains many sculptures.” This unique and little-known museum located in the town of Doñinos de Salamanca, shows the evolution of a sculptor who worked solely with concrete. Mateos was born in 1931 in Salamanca. Growing up in a family of stonemasons, he took an early interest in construction and concrete.
Built between 1997 and 1999, the museum shows the evolution of Mateos’s work over his a career, with 170 pieces created between the 1970s and 1990s.
