This news goes to 11. The sequel to the masterpiece rock-doc parody film “This Is Spinal Tap” is set to hit theaters this fall. Bleecker Street has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues,” the film from director Rob Reiner that has Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer all reprising their roles as England’s loudest — and most punctual — rock band.

The film will get a wide release on September 12, and in anticipation of that, Bleecker Street is also re-releasing a newly-restored edition of the 1984 original film back in to theaters this summer. That new version will also hit digital and streaming platforms, making it the first time the film has been available digitally in years.

“Spinal Tap II” was conceived by Guest, McKean, Reiner, and Shearer and follows Tap as they reunite after a 15-year hiatus for one final concert. Reiner is back playing documentarian Martin “Marty” DiBergi, and David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel, and Derek Smalls are going to be hitting the road this time alongside a litany of real-life musical guest stars, including Elton John, Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks, and Trisha Yearwood.

Some folks who had small roles in the 1984 film, including Paul Shaffer and Fran Drescher, are also returning for the sequel. The film also stars Don Lake, John Michael Higgins, Nina Conti, Griffin Matthews, Kerry Godliman, and Chris Addison.

“Spinal Tap II” is produced by Rob Reiner, Michele Reiner, and Matthew George and was financed under the Castle Rock Entertainment banner. Derrick J. Rossi PhD, Hernan Narea, Jonathan Fuhrman, and Christopher H. Warner executive produced the film.

“This Is Spinal Tap” is one of the more influential comedies of its time, launching Christopher Guest’s career and defining the mockumentary for years to come. In 2002, the film was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry.

Bleecker Street most recently released Mike Leigh’s “Hard Truths,” and its upcoming 2025 slate includes “The Wedding Banquet” with Bowen Yang and Lily Gladstone, “The Friend” with Naomi Watts and Bill Murray, and “Relay” with Riz Ahmed.

The deal was brokered by John Burnham of Atlas Artists with Kent Sanderson and Avy Eschenasy of Bleecker Street.
