In an unexpected turn, CBS’ decision to cancel So Help Me Todd after two successful seasons has left fans puzzled and disappointed. The show, known for its unique mix of legal drama and family dynamics, had steady ratings and a devoted audience, making the announcement all the more surprising.

Here’s what led to the cancellation, the network’s reasoning, and what it means for the future of the beloved series.

Why was So Help Me Todd canceled before Season 3?

CBS canceled So Help Me Todd after two seasons in April 2024. The legal dramedy features Skylar Astin as Todd, a private investigator working for his lawyer mother, Margaret, played by Marcia Gay Harden. The show earned critical acclaim for blending family drama with legal comedy but was not renewed for a third season.

The official reason for the cancellation was ratings. So Help Me Todd averaged 7.7 million viewers during its second season in Live+35 ratings (via Screenrant). However, this performance ranked lower than other CBS shows. CBS stated it needed space for new programming, including the Matlock reboot starring Kathy Bates. With a crowded slate, the network decided to cut the show along with others.

So Help Me Todd was part of a broader 2024 programming shake-up at CBS. The network canceled multiple shows, including long-running series like Blue Bloods (14 seasons) and Young Sheldon (7 seasons). Compared to these, So Help Me Todd was the shortest-running series cut. This widespread restructuring was driven by CBS’ need to prioritize new pilots and fresh content for the fall season.

Despite solid viewership and slight growth in Season 2, So Help Me Todd was canceled. Nearly 80,000 fans petitioned unsuccessfully to save it. CBS declined to move the show to Paramount+, citing a crowded programming slate. The decision highlights the challenge of balancing ratings and competition in a packed lineup. While popular among fans, the show’s future remains uncertain. There are no current plans for revival on other networks or platforms.
