Warning: Spoilers for Star Wars: Jedi Knights #1Obi-Wan Kenobi is arguably one of the most skilled and reliable Jedi in Star Wars lore. His strategic mind and bravery make him a perfect General during the Clone Wars. But a new comic is showing new aspects of Obi-Wan’s connection to the Force and power, leading to tragic results.
Star Wars: Jedi Knights #1 by Marc Guggenheim and Madibek Musabekov shows a period of time before Episode I: The Phantom Menace when Obi-Wan was an even younger padawan. He expresses unyielding faith in his master, Qui Gon, even in the midst of battle.
However, during a quiet moment with Yoda at the Jedi Temple, Obi-Wan’s fears become apparent. While overseeing Obi-Wan’s progression in training as a padawan, Yoda notes how powerful Obi-Wan has grown, particularly in his ability to see into the future through the Force – making his relationship with Qui-Gon Jinn all the more tragic.
Obi-Wan Kenobi Feared His Master’s Death Years Before it Happened
Star Wars: Jedi Knights #1 by Marc Guggenheim, Madibek Musabekov, Luis Guerrero, and Clayton Cowles
Obi-Wan’s talent and connection to the Force was apparent from a young age, but his fighting style was known to be too aggressive and reckless for the Jedi masters’ liking. Therefore, Obi-Wan had difficulty matching up with a master, as they all passed on taking him on as an apprentice – even his future master. However, Qui-Gon Jinn eventually saw the potential Obi-Wan exhibited, just as he eventually saw with Anakin, and took Obi-Wan under his wing as his padawan. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan’s relationship grew to be of great importance to both of them, making Obi-Wan’s precognitive Force abilities a source of anxiety for the young padawan.
Obi-Wan is understandably shaken, as his love for Qui-Gon Jinn runs deep.
In Jedi Knights #1, Obi-Wan confides in Yoda and expresses that the visions have begun to haunt him, as he continually sees a future where his beloved master dies. An assassination attempt was made on Qui-Gon only a few days before Obi-Wan’s visions started. Yoda, though impressed with Obi-Wan’s strong ability, advises him that the biggest issue a Jedi must discern is knowing which visions to trust, as the Force does not always provide a clear view of the future. Regardless, Obi-Wan is understandably shaken, as his love for Qui-Gon Jinn runs deep.
Obi-Wan Kenobi”s Vision Ultimately Came True, And Nothing Could Have Prepared Him for Losing His Master
Star Wars: Jedi Knights #1 Variant Cover by Giuseppe Camuncoli and David Curiel
While it is unknown where Jedi Knights will take the master-apprentice duo as the series progresses, Obi-Wan’s visions were sadly proven to be accurate only a few years later. The sequence in The Phantom Menace where Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon face-off against Darth Maul is filled with nail-biting tension, enhanced by John Williams’ unforgettable score. But the worst part is Obi-Wan being trapped behind a force-field, having no other choice but to watch helplessly as his master is cut down by Maul. While the scene is heartbreaking, the new lore given in Jedi Knights #1 makes Obi-Wan’s suffering even more terrible.
Though the unknown adversary trying to assassinate Qui-Gon Jinn in Jedi Knights #1 is at the forefront of Obi-Wan’s precognitive visions, the assassin will clearly fail their mission. However, the Force was ultimately showing Obi-Wan that he would lose Qui-Gon sooner rather than later, regardless of the circumstances. The fact that Obi-Wan is a growing padawan when his talent with Force visions begins to grow strong is also significant, as he was still just a padawan when Qui-Gon was killed. His talents grew in time to prepare him for one of the most significant losses of his life.
Obi-Wan Tried to Teach Anakin to Learn the Same Hard Lesson About the Future
Anakin Preferred to Take Action Instead of Following His Master’s Instructions
Qui-Gon’s death could be considered a catalyst for Obi-Wan’s ability to handle Anakin’s own troublesome Force-related visions in the future. In Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Anakin begins to have nightmares of his mother’s suffering, causing him nothing but anguish. As Anakin confides in Obi-Wan, Obi-Wan passes on the same knowledge that Yoda gave him when he feared his ability to see varying futures. However, the difference between the ways Anakin and Obi-Wan handle possible disasters could not be more opposite. While Obi-Wan thinks before he acts, Anakin jumps headfirst without considering the consequences of his actions.

So many Jedi were blind to the Order’s real problems, even Obi-Wan Kenobi. He admitted as much on Mustafar, even if he didn’t realize it.
Qui-Gon’s death was a tragedy for the entire Jedi Council and the galaxy as a whole, as his progressive thoughts about the nature of the Force and purposes of the Jedi could have changed everything, including the Clone Wars. But his death was even more of a tragedy for his apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Though Qui-Gon had trained Obi-Wan well, Obi-Wan was not prepared to be a master himself, especially to a boy who the Council was so adamantly against. Sadly, Obi-Wan Kenobi’s precognitive prowess had shown him what was to come for Qui-Gon, even if his death happened at a different time.
