The hand flex seen ’round the world can now be viewed on the big screen once more…

Yes, the iconic 2005 adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Pride & Prejudice” is returning to theaters for its 20th anniversary. Focus Features is re-releasing “Pride & Prejudice” starting April 20, with the special theatrical event taking place both on April 20 and April 23 nationwide. There also will be limited edition merchandise to further immortalize the beloved film.

Joe Wright directs the four-time Academy Award nominated feature that stars Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet, who immediately loathes the icy Mr. Darcy (Mathew Macfadyen). However, as their lives become intertwined, she finds herself captivated by the very person she swore to despise for all eternity.

Carey Mulligan made her film debut with “Pride & Prejudice,” which co-stars Rosamund Pike (with whom Mulligan later reunited for “Saltburn”), Judi Dench, Donald Sutherland, and Brenda Blethyn.

In addition to the theatrical re-release, Focus is also partnering with Decca Records for the long-awaited vinyl release of the Academy Award-nominated “Pride & Prejudice” soundtrack, composed by Dario Marianelli and performed by Jean-Yves Thibaudet. It will be released later this spring in multiple formats.

Co-lead star Macfadyen previously said that being recognized as Darcy by fans is “probably the most flattering thing that happens” to him. There also, of course, is the viral TikTok trend of sharing the rain-soaked scene where Darcy professes his love for Knightley’s Elizabeth.

“It’s a good 20 years later, so I think I can’t be aging that badly,” “Succession” Emmy winner Macfadyen said in 2024.

He also admitted to Vanity Fair that he felt a “self-imposed pressure” of accurately portraying the character Darcy. “I did feel pressure — maybe it was a self-imposed pressure of, you know: ‘This is a big film, don’t get it wrong,’” he said, later adding, “I sort of ended up [being offered] a lot of things that are similar to ‘Pride & Prejudice.’ And I thought: I mustn’t do that, I should try and do something different.”

And Macfadyen’s take even received the most beloved previous Darcy’s stamp of approval: Colin Firth, who played Mr. Darcy in the 1995 BBC miniseries, said that it was Macfadyen’s performance that made him “finally” understand the character. “I had to write a fan letter,” Firth said. “Definitely my favorite Darcy.”
