On the February 10 episode of Below Deck Down Under, Captain Jason Chambers continues his streak of being the silliest captain of the entire Below Deck franchise. Captain Jason first appeared on Below Deck Down Under season 1, and has continued to man the ship ever since. He’s also become a fan favorite due to his rugged good looks and Australian accent, plus his bachelor status. You might say he’s a real dreamboat.
Captain Jason’s been leaning into his heartthrob persona this season, first by appearing in a series of sultry promotional images, and then, on Monday’s episode, by treating charter guests to a night in the “Captain’s Lounge,” where he wore a short, silky robe with an ornate pattern. His bountiful chest hair was on full display. The yacht crew works hard to ensure that guests have a memorable experience on board, and the Captain’s Lounge was one way they made sure the guests had fun.
Captain Jason has faced some criticism this season, due to his borderline unprofessional behavior. The promo shoot and the Captain’s Lounge gimmick, coupled with issues he’s had maintaining control over his crew, are proving that Captain Jason’s embracing his newfound celebrity, but is it too much? I’m not sure I could ever imagine seeing Captain Lee Rosbach, Captain Sandy Yawn, or Captain Glenn Shephard lounging around in a provocative robe in front of guests. While Captain Jason is a bit younger than them, he still needs to maintain the dignity of the boat.

Viewers Got To See A Lot Of Captain Jason
The charter guests on the episode entitled, “The Captain’s Lounge,” are a group of restaurateurs, so the staff members had to be sure to keep their hospitality standards high in order to impress them—and hopefully earn a nice tip at the end of the charter. Because the charter guests expressed interest in having a fun night out, the crew decided to create a lounge for them on the ship, since the nightlife in Seychelles is a little quiet.
“What happens in the lounge stays in the lounge,” said Captain Jason with a smirk.
The crew set up the “sexy” lounge on board, and after dinner, guests were invited to visit the lounge. Captain Jason upped the unserious factor by donning one of his famous silk robes, which he’s known to wear during his downtime. Could Captain Jason’s display on this episode help drum up interest in his own line of robes? In a thread started by teanailpolish, fans think that’s the case, as Captain Jason has a website, captainslounge.life, and there’s an online merch store section, which the site says is “coming soon.”

Regardless, the guests loved hanging out with a more relaxed Jason, who was lounging on a couch and holding an unlit cigar in the lounge. Yet as I watched, I couldn’t help thinking Captain Lee would never do that. Luckily, the charter guests were charmed by the Captain’s Lounge, as well as the lap dances they got from bosun Wihan du Toit.
The Poses Were Over-The-Top
Fans knew we were going to see a different side of Captain Jason as soon as the promos for the season were dropped. Of course, the network probably had a lot to do with it, but Captain Jason was a willing participant. In the promos, he’s shown emerging from the water, dripping wet in his captain’s uniform, and walking in slow motion. In another shot, he is lying on the beach as the waves crash over him.
Again, I beg you to consider whether other captains would have taken this route. It wouldn’t happen under their watch, even if the network pressured them to. The captain has always been the calm, steady, professional face of the ship, and the leader of the entire crew. Watching Captain Jason remove his shirt while winking at the camera undermines the position of captain.
Captain Jason Has Struggled To Be A Leader
His Conflict With Chef Tzarina Is Only The Beginning
Chef Tzarina Mace-Randolph is a veteran crew member, but this season, she clashed with Captain Jason. She felt he was micromanaging her in the galley, which frustrated her. As she vented to other crew members, Captain Jason overheard her and sternly reprimanded her.
“Don’t start picking a fight with me. I’m on your side. I’m here to support you, to make your job easier. I’ve given a solution, and then I walk in and you’ve got a problem with what I’m giving? Is this the way it’s going to be all season? No. I’m not going to put up with it.”
Chef Tzarina isn’t known to have issues with her captain. Their conflict paints a larger picture of a crew that has lost faith in their leader. Maybe the robes are to blame?
Captain Jason had another misstep during the Captain’s Lounge episode, when one of the yacht’s jet skis capsized while a guest was on board. The jet ski had already shown signs of malfunctioning, but the deck crew used it anyway, which could have been a disaster for the guests. As the person in charge, Captain Jason is ultimately responsible for everything that happens on charter, and his leadership failed in this situation.
Below Deck Down Under airs Mondays at 8 p.m. EST on Bravo.
