Anthony Mackie has seemingly confirmed that Sam Wilson/Captain America will have a role to play in Avengers: Doomsday.

Mackie is reprising his role as Wilson in Captain America: Brave New World, which will be released in theaters this coming February. Following that and a handful of other MCU projects, Marvel Studios plans to release Avengers: Doomsday on May 1, 2026.

Avengers: Doomsday is being directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. So far, it’s been confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. will play Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom in the film, while the main cast of The Fantastic Four — Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach — will also appear.

Chris Evans, who previously played Steve Rogers/Captain America in the MCU, is also set to star in Avengers: Doomsday; although, it has not been officially announced who he’s playing.

Deadline reported that, according to the publication’s sources, Mackie will return as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday. Speaking with Empire Magazine, Mackie seemingly confirmed this, as he noted that he’s “really looking forward” to working with the Russo Brothers again.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back on set with the Russos,” Mackie said. “They understand this Marvel world in a very unique way. And just having him [Downey Jr.] back adds so much. To see what he brings to the table is just a huge opportunity.”

Captain America 4 producer Nate Moore also said that there “is certainly more story to be told for Captain America” after Brave New World. 

He further teased that Brave New World will see Sam question whether or not he’s the right person to lead Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as the MCU heads toward Doomsday.

“I think that Avengers teams are best when they are led by a Captain America,” Moore said. “And this movie gives us a little bit of space to talk about, ‘Where are the Avengers? What does it mean to have Avengers? And is Sam the right guy to lead them?’”

Captain America: Brave New World releases in United States theaters on February 14, 2025, from Marvel.
