Despite the mixed reviews, the actress expressed her admiration for Babylon.

The 34-year-old actress and producer has discussed her confusion over the backlash against Babylon, the 2022 film directed by Damien Chazelle.

Margot Robbie recently admitted that she remains baffled by the mixed reviews and box office failure of the ambitious Hollywood epic. Despite its star-studded cast, including Brad Pitt and Diego Calva, and its exploration of the silent film era, Babylon grossed just $63 million worldwide against an $80 million budget.

Robbie shared, “I know I am biased because I am very close to the project and I obviously believe in it, but I still can’t figure out why people hated it. I wonder if in 20 years people are going to be like, ‘Wait, “Babylon” didn’t do well at the time?’” She compared the movie’s reception to The Shawshank Redemption, which was initially a commercial failure but later became a beloved classic.

Robbie expressed hope that, over time, audiences might revisit the film with a different perspective. Portraying Nellie LaRoy, a character inspired by the real-life Clara Bow, she reflected fondly on the creative challenges of the role. Additionally, Robbie praised Damien Chazelle’s relentless passion for pushing boundaries. 

The actress said, “Damien is so thorough. Do you know what I loved so much about working with him? I felt like no one had really put their foot to the floor with the gas, but he wanted that all the time. He wanted more always. Even when we were prepping.”

Furthermore, Margot Robbie recounted how she worked on 51 different accent variations for her character, ranging from Bostonian tones to playful mixes like Fran Drescher and Snooki.
